Sony has just made available a new firmware package targeted at its R5 recorder and F5 and F55 CineAlta digital cameras, namely version 4.0, which includes several functional improvements that should enhance the compatible devices’ overall performance.

Specifically speaking, the newly released update adds the “Picture Cache Recording” option, which allows users to start a recording up to 18 seconds in advance of time, includes a new configurable user menu, and gives owners the ability to view the setup menu on the sub display.

In addition to that, version 4.0 brings 7 additional marker colors, an auto-iris level setting, an “S-Log3” option to the paint menu, as well as support for the latest CA-4000 firmware, fixes problems with False Color functions, and includes several other changes that you can view on the description page of each download.

If you wish to update the camera to this firmware, get and extract the proper downloadable archive, copy the .bin file onto a formatted SD card, and insert it into the camera.

Now go to System Menu → Version → Version Up → Execute, follow the displayed recommendations, select “Execute” again. Check the version information shown on the screen, select “Execute” once more, and allow the digital camera to perform the upgrade.

After the installation is complete, make sure to restart the device and check the currently installed firmware to ensure that the update has been successful.

That being said, from the links below, follow the one that best describes your Sony device, make sure to read the update guide provided in each archive, and apply the new firmware to your unit.
