NVIDIA has made available a new firmware package developed for its latest SHIELD TV 2017 gaming console, namely version 5.0.1, which installs Google's latest Android 7.0 operating system.

Thank’s to this upgrade, owners can now double-press the home button to access recent apps quickly, enjoy picture-in-picture support for apps like Live Channels, as well as navigate more quickly with the new right-side vertical settings menus.

In addition to that, the current upgrade enables cast for HBO GO, adds Pause/Play button functionality on the SHIELD remote, includes 4.1, 6.1, and 8.1 speaker configuration support for Plex, and allows writing on the attached USB or SD card storage.

Moreover, NVIDIA improves its GeForce NOW performance (up to GeForce GTX 1080), upgrades GameStream to provide 4K HDR and smoother streaming, and includes support for Amazon Video, as well as several games.

Last but not least, the SHIELD TV 2017 is also compatible with new apps, such as NFL, Twitter for TV, ComedyCentral, Vimeo, and Viki, gets an NVIDIA Games app that replaces its former SHIELD Hub, and receives several other improvements as highlighted in the Release Notes below.

When it comes to installation, you should know that NVIDIA has provided both the OTA (Recovery OS) and Developer-only (rooted) images for its consoles. Also, make sure to familiarize yourself with the update steps before initiating the flash process.
