Nikon has rolled out a new firmware package targeted at its D5500 digital camera, namely version 1.02, which resolves the shutter’s behavior that won’t be released in certain situations when used with an SB-800 flash unit.

In addition to that, the present update makes sure the camera won’t stop responding if the multi selector is pressed, and that it won't fail to store the settings for Autofocus > a3 Built-in AF-assist illuminator after rotating the mode dial to a different position.

Moreover, Nikon also improves the optimal exposure feature for photos taken during live view with type E lenses (support both AF and EAC), and ensures the camera won’t display shooting information in place of the most recent picture when users take their eyes off the viewfinder.

When it comes to installation, first back up all settings changed from the default values, as well as any important files to avoid any data loss, make sure your camera’s battery is fully charged, and don’t interrupt the upgrade in any way once initiated.

That said, save and run the downloadable package (available for Mac OS and Windows platforms), transfer the newly extracted .bin file onto a formatted memory card, and insert the SD card into the appropriate slot.

Afterward, go to SETUP MENU > Firmware version, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update. Once finished, check the camera’s firmware version to ensure the process has been successful.
