AsusWrt-Merlin has rolled out a newer version of its custom firmware packages, namely build 380.65, which updates OpenSSL (1.0.2k), Tor (0.2.9.9), Nano (2.7.4), as well as Busybox (1.25.1), and includes a large number of changes.

In addition to that, the present update installs the new OpenVPN 2.4.0 version that implements features like GCM ciphers, LZ4 compression, tls-crypt, Cipher negotiation (NCP), and more, and adds ntpd, time, uniq, xargs and getopt Busybox applets.

Moreover, AsusWrt-Merlin removes support for all RC ciphers on OpenVPN, allows creating a system log entry if a new firmware version is available, fixes several OpenVPN-related issues, and implements numerous other improvements as highlighted in the Release Notes below.

When it comes to compatible devices, this release is suitable for ASUS’ RT-N66U (B1, R, W), RT-AC88U, RT-AC87 (R, U), RT-AC68 (P, R,W ,U), RT-AC66 (W, U, R), RT-AC56 (R, U, S), RT-AC5300, RT-AC3200, and RT-AC3100 wireless routers.

In terms of installation, just save and unzip the appropriate archive for your model, establish a wired connection between the router and your computer, and go to Advanced Settings > Administration > Firmware Upgrade.

Now, click on the “Choose File” button near the “New Firmware File” section, select the newly extracted .trx file, hit “Upload,” and wait for your router to do its job. Bear in mind that interrupting this process can result in serious device malfunctions.
