The release resolves the overexposed face-picture issue

Today, Nikon has rolled out new firmware packages developed for its Z 6 and Z 7 digital cameras, namely version 1.01 and 1.03, respectively, which manage fix an issue where face-pictures were overexposed if taken with a radio-controlled Advanced Wireless Lighting.

Moreover, the current updates now apply maximum sensitivity for movie recording when the camera is in P, S, A, or M mode and N-Log is enabled, and resolve some compatibility issues with third-party software regarding the Exif 35 mm.

Besides these changes, the Z 6 firmware also corrects the aperture selection in P (programmed auto) mode, as well as removes a bug that prevented flash units controlled via radio Advanced Wireless Lighting from syncing with shutter speeds of 1/100 s or faster.

Therefore, if you have encountered these issues and consider an upgrade, first of all, ensure the currently installed version isn’t either newer or matching this release, and only afterward download and run the appropriate file for your configuration.

Take into account that the producer has provided separate files for both Mac OS and Windows platforms. Also, it would be a good idea to back up all images and important data stored on the camera’s internal memory before initiating an upgrade.

With this in mind, transfer the newly created “firmware” folder onto a formatted memory card, insert it into the camera and turn it on, select Firmware Version, and follow all instructions displayed on the screen for a complete and successful installation.

Last but not least, once finished, it would be a good idea to remove and format the memory card used in this process and check the currently installed firmware to make sure it reads version 1.01 or 1.03 (depending on your model).

That said, download Nikon Z 6 Camera Firmware 1.01 or download Nikon Z 7 Camera Firmware 1.03, apply it using the steps above, and check back with us as often as possible to be aware when a newer version is available for your camera.
