Thecus has made available a new firmware package targeted at its N2520, N2560, N4520, and N4560 NAS servers, namely ThecusOS 6.1 build 8, which adds support for the HDD spindown feature and allows root on EMMC.

If you intend to apply this release on your network storage server, first back up all your files from the NAS and then clean up the HDD – this task will erase all saved data.

Now, get the proper downloadable archive for your Thecus device and extract the content onto a formatted USB drive (8GB or more). As a recommendation, due to the large file size (over 1GB), it would be best if you used a download manager in order to get the archive.

When done, turn off the NAS, eject all connected HDDs, insert the memory stick into the device’s USB port, and power on the unit. At this point, the network storage will recognize the new software and initiate the update process, which should take somewhere between 8 to 16 minutes.

Bear in mind that, during the installation, you mustn’t power off the device, remove the USB drive, or use the NAS’ controls – doing so will cause the update to be interrupted, which might result in serious device malfunctions. Simply wait for the Thecus unit to power off automatically.

That being said, from the links below, follow the one that best describes your network storage, take into account all aforementioned aspects, and enjoy the newly-improved NAS unit.
