Pioneer has just released new firmware for AVIC-Z140BH and AVIC-X940BT car navigation systems. There are two versions available: 5.100 – for units that have been updated using the NAVTEQ software T1000-20495 and 4.600 – for the devices that haven't been updated yet.

The two releases apply only for the models mentioned above sold in US and Canada and the improvement they add is the iPhone 5 compatibility for AppRadio mode.

Updating requires a few steps, first of which is the download of the zip file from the links below. Prepare a formatted SD card and copy the “AVICZ110” and “TESTMODE.KEY” folders on it. When this process is done, safely remove the card.

Turn the vehicle's key to ON and power up your navigation system. Press the “Mode” button and then select “Off” in the “AV source” screen.

Now, insert the SD card and wait for the device to recognize and install the firmware. This should take about 2-3 minutes. When the update process is complete, the screen will display a “Program forced write [System uCom Write]” window. Select “System uCom Write” and press the “Mode” button.

In the next screen, confirm that SD version is “8.05” and uCom version is “8.04” or earlier by pressing the “Mode” button. If the SD version is displayed as “- - - - - - - -” the data on the SD memory card may be corrupted.

This update takes about six minutes to complete and once it does, the device will reboot and the “Program forced write [System uCom Write]” screen comes up again. Select “System uCom Write” and confirm the uCom version is 8.05. Eject the SD memory card and turn to off position the vehicle key.

Get the new firmware at the link below and stay “update one minute ago.”
