Compatibility with previously-supported units is maintained

Merlin has just rolled out a new version of its custom firmware developed for several ASUS routers, namely build 376.48.1, which adds support for ASUS’ new RT-AC68P wireless unit and maintains the previous compatibility list.

In addition to that, Merlin’s update also re-hardcodes ASUS’ max-lease calculation implemented in GPL 376.2769 back to 253, as this addition wasn’t working properly. Still, this issue will be fully resolved once a newer GPL is released.

If upgraded, the routers will use sha256 checksums instead of MD5, as this will significantly improve security regarding file download validation. Also, Merlin drops its workaround for unmounted/hidden partition in favor of ASUS’ official fix included in GPL 3561.

Last but not least, this release resolves a Samba 3.6 bug that didn’t allow this service to start when the admin user name contained uppercase characters. To be more specific, Samba now tries to localize the UNIX user as provided.

As for compatibility, besides the new RT-AC68P addition, this update can be applied on all device models of ASUS’ RT-AC87, - AC56, -AC66, and -AC68 routers, as well as on the RT-N16 and RT-N66 wireless units.

Moreover, the installation steps are similar to any regular firmware upgrade and you can revert to a previous official ASUS version anytime; just apply the proper software.

That being said, download AsusWrt-Merlin Router Firmware 376.48.1 for your specific device model, apply it, and constantly check our website to stay “updated one minute ago.”
