Today, ASRock has made available a new BIOS package targeted at one of its workstation motherboards, namely version 1.40 developed for the Z77 WS unit.

The newly released version includes a few changes such as PCIe, USB, and memory improvements, which should enhance the device’s overall compatibility, updates the board’s Management Engine (ME) and CPU code, and adds support for Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system.

When it comes to applying this update, the release consists of 3 download records that describe 3 different upgrade methods: one using the BIOS’s embedded Instant Flash option, and one DOS- and one Windows-based procedures (Windows 8.1 platform isn’t yet supported).

Therefore, if you consider upgrading your BIOS using Instant Flash, then get the proper file, save it onto a USB/floppy drive, press the F6 key while in the POST screen, and wait for the system to apply the new BIOS.

If the Windows-related method is desired, then get and expand the correct archive, close all programs that might interfere with the flash, and run the newly extracted .exe file. The system will now apply the new BIOS, and afterwards it will require a reboot – make sure you allow the computer to do that.

Last but not least, the DOS method needs you to get the Z77 WS(1.40)DOS.zip archive, extract it, copy the contents onto a formatted USB drive, boot from it, and run the .exe file in the DOS environment.

That being said, if you consider installing this latest version, then download ASRock Z77 WS BIOS 1.40 describing the desired method, take into account all the above-mentioned aspects, apply it, and enjoy your newly updated workstation motherboard.
