Read the information in your manual or on the product web site to find out if you have an onboard ethernet solution. Network connectivity can be available through an onboard ethernet controller or an ethernet/NIC card. If you have a separate ethernet/NIC/network card, you need to obtain the drivers from the manufacturer of the card - even if the chip on the card is manufactured by VIA. The VT8231 and VT8233 southbridges, may be supplied with an integrated ethernet solution. To be sure, check the motherboard manual or the specifications of the mainboard on the manufacturer's web site. Other mainboards might have what is often referred to as a companion chip. That is an ethernet chip which is separate to the South Bridge. Check the motherboard manual or the specifications of the mainboard on the manufacturer's web site to find the chip ID (VT6105 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter for example) and obtain the drivers either from the motherboard manufacturer's web site or VIA Arena.

It is highly recommended to always use the most recent driver version available.

Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed an incorrect or mismatched driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.
