New Features:
- New Time Pulse functionality
u-blox 6 receivers provide one or two (e.g. LEA-6T) TIMEPULSE pins delivering a Timepulse (TP) signal with a configurable pulse period from 1 ms to 60 s (i.e. 1/60Hz to 1kHz), pulse length and polarity (rising or falling edge). For LEA-6T Precision Timing Modules the TP pulse period is configurable from 0.1us to 60s (i.e. 1/60Hz to 10MHz).
It is possible to define different signal behavior (i.e. output frequency and pulse length) depending on whether or not the receiver is locked to GPS time. Timepulse signals can be configured using the UBX proprietary message CFG-TP5. CFG-TP message remains supported with u-blox 6 for legacy purposes, and it is recommended to use CFG-TP5.
- New and improved acquisition engine
u-blox 6 has a new acquisition engine that improves the performance of u-blox 6 in different ways: the cold start sensitivity is improved by 3 dB, this results in much faster time-to-first-fix (TTFF) under weak signal condition and with the shorter TTFF the overall current consumption is also reduced. In addition the new acquisition engine of u-blox 6 has a significant reduced acquisition current, which facilitates system power requirements.
- Aided start sensitivity improved for XTAL versions
The use of aiding information was improved for XTAL based version. This yields in higher sensitivity in aided starts.

Limitations:
- Maximum speed limitation
Firmware V6.02 produces no position outputs at velocities of 600m/s or higher. This is in accordance with the Swiss government’s “Güterkontrollverordnung” and “Liste der Dual-Use Güter und –Technologie” (dated March 2008), which represent Switzerland’s implementation of the Wassenaar Arrangement, Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), Nuclear Suppliers' Group and the Australian Group (AG).
- 5Hz Navigation Output rate
The 5Hz navigation output rate cannot be guaranteed for every configuration. CPU load depends very much on satellite constellation, enabled features (e.g. SBAS), available satellites or acquisition and navigation engine status. In some instances during startup, some epochs may be omitted if CPU load is too high. Nevertheless this has no impact on receiver navigation performance. On FLASH receivers the max output rate is limited to 2Hz.
- USB usage with Power Save Modes
When the Power Save Mode sets the receiver to backup mode, the USB interface will be disconnected but continues to draw power over the USB connector. This violates the USB specification and therefore Power Save Don’t use Power Save Mode together with USB.
- High data rates on USB or SPI can influence tracking performance
It is possible to operate the USB and SPI interface at high data rates than specified (with appropriate error handling), however this can influence tracking performance. Under normal operating conditions according specification this presents no problems when using UBX or NMEA messages.
- Raw data output rate
Raw data output cannot be configured at a different rate than the position fix rate. Therefore the maximum update rate is limited to 5Hz when running firmware from ROM.
