NVIDIA has made available for download its 103 firmware update targeted at SHIELD Portable gaming consoles, which installs Android 5.1 on the device, and removes a bug that prevented users from reading books in Google Play Books app.
In addition to that, several applications and features unsupported on this Lollipop update, such as Sonic 4, Episode II, Expendable: Rearmed, and Android Browser, will be removed, Miracast support is also dropped, and the Twitch app is upgraded to the latest version.
Last but not least, the 103 firmware adds NVIDIA’s console as a source device for Chromecast or any Google Cast Ready device connected to a TV.
As for installation, first you will need ADB and FastBoot tools that are provided as part of the Android SDK, connect the SHIELD to your computer, and turn off the device and press the Back, Home, and SHIELD buttons until it boots in order to put it into fastboot mode.
Afterwards, save and unzip the downloadable package, run the commands below, and wait patiently for these images to be applied. Also, bear in mind that the bootloader must be unlocked, otherwise you might damage your device.
That being said, download NVIDIA SHIELD Portable Firmware 103, carefully apply it on your gaming console, and enjoy the changes this new release brings about.
