The new release makes Start/Play button behave as in KitKat

NVIDIA has rolled out a new firmware version compatible with its SHIELD Portable gaming consoles, namely update 106, which improves NVIDIA’s button functionality from voice search to SHIELD Hub.

In addition to that, the new update also implements several security enhancements, and changes the Start/Play button behavior so that it now works as it did in the earlier Android KitKat platform.

Unfortunately, just like the NVIDIA SHIELD Portable Firmware 103 release, this version doesn’t include support for older features, such as Sonic 4 Episode II, Expendable: Rearmed, the default Android Browser, and Miracast.

However, owners who really want to re-enable these applications and features must revert to the version prior to 103, namely install the NVIDIA SHIELD Portable Firmware 101.

When it comes to updating your device (either to 106 or 101), you must first save the downloadable archive, as well as the ADB and FastBoot tools that are part of the Android SDK.

Now, connect the device to your computer, make sure the SHIELD’s bootloader is unlocked, and put it into fastboot mode. Afterwards, extract the downloadable archive, and run the following commands from the directory where you extracted this package:

Commands
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img fastboot flash boot boot.img fastboot flash system system.img fastboot flash userdata userdata.img fastboot flash staging blob fastboot flash dtb tegra114-roth.dtb

That being said, download NVIDIA SHIELD Portable Firmware 106, carefully apply it on your gaming console taking into account all aspects described above, and stay “updated one minute ago.”
