14 DAY TRIAL // Amazon has made available a new firmware update targeted at its Kindle Voyage (7th Gen), Kindle (7th Gen), Kindle Paperwhite (7th Gen), and Kindle Paperwhite (6th Gen) eReaders, namely version 5.6.5, which redesigns Smart Lookup, typography, layout, and more.
If applied, the present firmware will provide easier access to Smart Lookup actions, such as highlight, create a note, share a quote, and more, all this while keeping features like Dictionary, Wikipedia, and X-Ray close. To bring up Smart Lookup, just tap and hold on a word phrase.
Moving forward, Amazon has included the ability to use their new and exclusive font, namely Bookerly, which should help users read faster on digital screens with lower eyestrain. Moreover, Goodreads now offers personalized recommendations and author profile pages.
Last but not least, version 5.6.5 also adds typography and layout improvements, such as hyphenation, justification, ligatures, and kerning, as well as pop-up footnotes, endnotes and chapter notes.
However, even though these enhancements are supported by quite all Kindle books, bear in mind that they are currently available only for titles in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch.
When it comes to installation, simply save the appropriate .bin file on a computer, transfer it onto your Kindle device via USB, go to Home > Menu > Settings > Menu > Update Your Kindle, tap “OK,” and wait for the eReader to do its job.
