Today, Amazon has announced the availability of its 5.6.1.1 firmware version compatible with 1st Generation Kindle Paperwhite e-Readers, which includes X-Ray improvements, support for new features, and several other enhancements.

Specifically speaking, this new update provides Family Library support that allows owners to link two Amazon accounts and share books, as well as the ability to view hints, definitions, and synonyms for difficult words through Amazon’s Word Wise feature.

In addition to that, version 5.6.1.1 gives users the ability to make use of the producer’s Kindle FreeTime Unlimited (optional children book subscription), and to view the “bones of a book” with an improved timeline (including image browsing and Notable Clips filtering).

If Amazon’s update is applied, the e-Reader will be able to access up to 40 magazine past issues from the cloud, and receive a deeper Goodreads integration that allows a quicker reading status access and update, as well as preview and purchase books without leaving Goodreads.

When it comes to installation, first go to Home > Menu > Settings > Menu > Device Info and make sure the current firmware version isn’t either newer or matching this release.

If all is ok, save the downloadable .bin file, send it to your Kindle through a USB cable, and go to Home > Menu > Settings > Update Your Kindle > Ok once the transfer is complete. Afterwards, just follow all instructions displayed on your device.

That being said, download Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation Firmware 5.6.1.1, apply it on your e-Reader, and enjoy the changes this new release brings about.
