Sony's PlayStation 3 console has just received a new firmware update. Version 4.40 is now available for download from Softpedia's database.

The changelog coming with this kind of release is from Sony's Japanese site and mentions improvements in system stability. There is also a paragraph about the RC-S380 card reader, which is now added on the supported devices list.

To make things clear and quote from the PS3News site, this particular device is “a USB NFC that reads contact-less IC cards which has been out in Japan, Europe and America since last year.”

The installation procedure is similar to its predecessor’s, 4.31, involving a USB Mass Storage device and the .pup file.

First of all, create a folder named “PS3” on the USB drive. Inside that folder, create a sub-folder called “UPDATE” in which the .pup (PlayStation Update file) will be copied. Safely remove the mass storage drive and proceed as follows.

Plug the device containing the update file in your PS3 unit and, from the “Settings” menu, select “System Update.”

In the next screen, select “Update via Storage Media” and then hit the “X” button. The console will search for valid update files on your USB Memory Stick and display them. When the screen asks you if it should start the installation procedure, hit the “X” button.

If everything works out right, under the “System Settings,” “System Information” menu you should see the current version of the software is 4.40.
