Realtek has just released a new Windows 8.1 driver for its RTL8188CUS single-chip IEEE 802.11b/g/n 1T1R WLAN controller with USB2.0 interface. Version 1026.5.1118.2013 fixes the OID (Object identifier) timeout issue and fine tunes the P2P architecture.

In addition to that, this release brings an improved SOFT AP ability, adds support for new IC (Integrated Circuit), as well as implements a correction to the issue where RtlDHCP (Realtek Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) didn't run correctly in certain situations.

The RTL8188CUS can be found in the form of a single-band 11n (1x1) WLAN USB dongle, single-band 11n (1x1) WLAN USB module, or single-band 11n (1x1) WLAN with Bluetooth 3.0+HS USB combo MiniCard.

The device has also been used with the well-known Raspberry Pi because of its capability to run in Access point mode. However, users who tried to employ the device in monitor mode have encountered limitations in that area. As they mention, the RTL8188CUS does not allow this function.

In terms of installation, simply save and unzip the downloadable archive, run the appropriate setup files, and follow all instructions displayed on-screen for a complete and successful installation.

Moreover, once finished, don’t forget to perform a system reboot in order to allow all changes to take effect properly. If this isn’t requested automatically upon completion, make sure to carry it out manually.
