Today, NETGEAR has made available a new firmware package targeted at its FVS318G Gigabit VPN firewall, namely version 3.1.1-18, which improves the overall security level by resolving the CVE-2014-0224 OpenSSL vulnerability.

Even though this enhancement is a step forward, the release still experiences some known issues such as the PPTP idle timeout problem, the impossibility to edit IPsec VPN user while in use, or the improper behavior when establishing calls between LAN and WAN with IGMP Pass through enabled.

However, if you intend to apply this newly released update, save and unzip the downloadable archive, make sure to reboot the firewall prior to initiating the upgrade (this is a must), and go to the Administration > Settings Backup and Firmware Upgrade on the device’s user interface.

Now, from the Router Upgrade section, click on the “Browse” button, navigate and select the “fvs318g_v3.1.1-18.img” file from the newly created folder, click “Upload,” and allow the FVS318G to perform the installation.

Bear in mind that, after hitting “Upload,” you mustn’t reboot or power off the device as this will crash the update and can also lead to serious device malfunctions. Upon completion, the firewall will automatically reboot announcing a successful upgrade.

With this in mind, download NETGEAR FVS318G VPN FireWall Firmware 3.1.1-18, follow the aforementioned steps, and improve the security of your device. Also, check our website as often as possible in order to be aware when a new update is available for your product.
