Today, BlackMagic Design has rolled out a new firmware update utility, namely version 1.9.7, which improves in-camera formatting support and adds SD card and SSD formatting support to a few of its cameras.

In order to be clear, this new release enhances in-camera formatting support for the producer’s Production Camera 4K unit, and introduces SD card and SSD formatting support for the Pocket Cinema Camera and Cinema Camera (both EF and MFT), respectively.

When it comes to installing the present update, you should know that BlackMagic has made available two downloadable packages, one compatible with the 64-bit variant of Microsoft’s Windows 7 and 8 operating systems, and the other targeted at Mac OS X 10.8 or later platforms.

Another aspect that I must highlight is that, for both configurations, a USB 2.0 port is required, and when updating the Cinema Camera or Production Camera 4K devices, an appropriate Thunderbolt port will be needed.

In addition to that, make sure you run “Uninstall Camera Utility” prior to applying the present release. Also, take into account that, when upgrading the Cinema Camera EF or MFT, their built-in LCD might start flickering – this is a normal behavior so don’t terminate the updated.

Therefore, in order to make use of the aforementioned changes, download BlackMagic Design Camera Firmware Update Utility 1.9.7 for the appropriate OS and device model, and use it to update your imaging device.
